What is meant by “building envelope”?

The building envelope is an architectural element that defines and encloses the perimeter of a construction’s structural framework—hence the term “boundary element.” Its primary function is to mediate, separate, and connect the interior with the exterior, while also serving as an environmental component that defines and characterizes surrounding outdoor spaces.
